Flessenpost 16: So you think you can dance

After last semesters (failed) rowing and volleyball career, I needed a new sport to get me to the Olympics (or maybe aiming a little lower, just for fun and to stay fit and active). Rowing was too much hassle with getting up at 4am and their program was mainly aimed at the elite who are willing to do that every single morning. Well, I am not exactly a morning person, so that was the end of row, row, row the boat.

Volleyball on the other hand was a lot of fun, but also so last semester, so the ACFR crew needed something new. Ultimate Frisbee it was! We were all ready to win this semesters championship, even signed up with two teams to increase our winning chances and included some solid training sessions in the park. But then disaster stroke and the competition got cancelled due to us being the only enthusiasts.. Well we are not one to give up that easily and let one little practicality get in the way, so we set up our own competition! Unfortunately, after two enthusiastic games, soon responsibilities and deadlines kicked in and the games went quickly from 6 versus 6, to 4 versus 4, to 1 on 1, to no game..

Hmm so I needed something new. Although most of ACFR is into climbing and is still trying to convince me to join, I decided to go for something a bit more me. Always having danced as a kid in primary school and high school, I felt moving to Sydney was a good time to pick that up again. The first trial was something completely new: Lindy hop. Somehow I convinced Aaron to join this 30s dance style with me and together we went to Glebe. As much fun as we had, it didn’t really feel like our vibe. So when Sydney Uni offered a semester jazz course, I didn’t have to think twice and signed up to get back into the good old jazz vibe! The course given at Sydney Uni is a lot of fun, but not necessarily quite technically challenging. So I am going to try out some of the courses the Sydney Dance Company has to offer together with Clara, Thordis and Dilara to kick start my dancing career.

After lindy hop, Aaron and I quickly figured out a better sport to do together: surfing! I had done a couple of lessons last summer and was ready to catch some waves again and Aaron, being the only Aussie who didn’t know how to surf, was quickly on board as well. And we better pick it up quick, cause the first surf road trip is already planned!

Besides my dancing and surfing adventures, there is always heaps of sport stuff happening in Sydney and Australia in general. So besides some random bootcamp and gym sessions, Thordis convinced us to join for a ‘hash run’: a drinking club with a running problem. You run following a set out trail marked by chalk signs on the street, so it’s sort of a quest with drinks at the half way point and in the end. The run we joined last Saturday was a special one with a cross dress theme and a 100m stiletto run just for fun. Normally I just go for my regular run around the botanical gardens, but who knows if I might start hashing instead. Anyways, Australia is quite a sporty country, so there will always be a new sport or challenge around the corner.

    Jacqueline Coolen:

    I know you can dance!!!
