I wake up to an unfamiliar sound and for a second I thought my housemate’s dog had gotten into my room. But no, that can’t be it. I always close my door at night. Still not fully awake, I am trying to make sense of what I am hearing and what is going on. I turn on the light and in the corner of my eye I see something big and black sprinting under my desk. IT’S A COCKROACH!!.. I thought I had gotten rid of all of them, or this is actually the first alive one I have seen. The other two dead ones just appeared out of nowhere in the middle of the room, as if that was just the perfect spot to suddenly die..
But no, this little bastard was running around. So they were back and the war was on! Completely awake in the instant, I grab my preferred weapon of choice: bug spray (kills instantly), why the cockroach goes for his: being nasty and quickly running around. While screaming, DIE COCKROACH DIE (as advised by an online article about how to defeat cockroaches), I spray half the can on top of him, but that only makes him more active and at some point he disappears in a haze of hyper running. (0-1) A terrible night sleep later, the next morning I find him in the corner: DEATH. 1-1!
After carefully transporting the fallen soldier out, I make sure to double spray my whole room again and remove anything they might find edible in a 10k radius. But one week later, they launch their counterattack and when I unsuspectingly walk into the kitchen, one crawls out of the bin on to the kitchen sink. ARGHHHH 1-2.. A lot of spraying and cursing later, it is 2-2.
For the non-Aussies this frustration and disgust with cockroaches might be hard to understand, but these monsters are no ordinary cockroaches, oh no, they are HUGE, they FLY and they are the most DISGUSTING thing you have ever seen walking around your kitchen.
When winter and the cold arrived, they withdrew to their secret hiding place and a temporary peace-treaty was signed. We are currently still on our cease-fire. Probably till the temperatures start to rise again, which is already slowly happening, and they will all come crawling back from their little holes, ready to attack.. But I stocked up on some spraying cans as well, so I got high hopes of winning this war once and for all!
To be continued..
